The Rock Garage was constructed in 1933 for Wayne Smith and Glen Greebon for use as a filling and service station. The main building is concrete with a corrugated metal roof on a wood frame. The projecting carport, supported by four square fieldstone columns, has a fieldstone parapet topped by pointed stones set along the ridge to produce a sawtooth effect.

Wayne and his wife, and later Glen and his wife as well, occupied living quarters on a second floor, which were removed in the late 1930s. The stairway leading to the second floor still exists. Gas was sold for five cents a gallon. One can still see where the gas pumps and air and water hoses were placed and imagine cars pulling in under the carport for filling up at the full-service station, now all but a thing of the past.

In 1960 the building was sold to Richard “Dick” Knoll and converted into a blacksmith shop that continued into the 2000s. Be sure to note the array of livestock brands that have been tested on the large double doors on the west side.

The site was the location for the first county courthouse. A window of the first Blanco County Courthouse can be seen in the back wall of the building, which retains a high degree of integrity and represents Blanco’s commercial development in the 1930s.
